LASER DENTISTRY
We all want to have healthy teeth. But the thought of needles and drills makes the idea of visiting the dentist less appealing. With the advent of dental lasers patients can now receive a better quality of dental care, with fewer visits and without many of the discomforts of traditional dentistry.
Lasers have been used in other medical fields for many years and have revolutionised many treatments, notably eye surgery and hair removal. This proven technology is now an established aspect of modern dentistry, and is widely used in Europe and the USA, and by a growing number of Australian dentists. Laser dentistry has been practised for more than 12 years, and recent advances have enhanced the considerable benefits for patients. The benefits for patients include:
- Less discomfort during and after treatments
- Preservation of natural, healthy teeth whilst targeting decay
- Protects teeth against further decay
- Less need for needles and drills
- One-hour superior teeth whitening with better results than conventional systems
- Effective treatments for sensitive teeth
- Root canal and gum disease treatments
- Laser treatments for many other dental procedures
How does it work?
A wide variety of lasers are used in dentistry. Different lasers are used for different dental applications and these are chosen according to the way in which the particular laser interacts with the tissue in the mouth. When the laser is applied to the target area, the laser energy is absorbed. Depending on the treatment, the effect may be to sterilise the area, or to remove decay, or even to make the teeth less sensitive. When used on soft tissue, lasers promote faster healing. Your nearest laser dentist can talk to you about the laser or lasers they are using and what sort of treatments these lasers offer.
All laser dentists from Laser Dentists Australia are accredited laser users and are specifically trained in the laser treatments they provide. Laser dental surgeries have special features which ensure complete safety for staff and patients. Protective eyewear is used during laser treatments and surgery doors are closed whilst the laser is in use. Your laser dentist will be happy to answer any questions you have about laser safety. |
